The original fire station (1852) served as a hospital during the Civil War. It was altered in 1881. Early on, citizens were required to burn candles in their front windows to help firemen find their way out of town after dark. Gas lights had not been installed at that time. The first recorded bucket brigade began in Hagerstown in 1790.
