Former site of Marshall and Cranwell’s Hardware Store on north
east corner of public square. Hagerstown artist John Stemple, sketching
on the store’s roof, was struck and killed by a stray bullet,
during hand-to-hand combat below him on July 6th , 1863. Later,
on the 13th, when Rebel forces were driven from Hagerstown, the
dashing Gen. Custer led a victory parade through the square, eliciting
admiring sighs from the ladies.
